You got it:The denim is woven by Europe's selvedge powerhouse Candiani. It has a deep, pure indigo, blue hue, and a rustic ring-spun character. At 15 oz the denim is extra durable, but quite heavy, especially for kids' jeans. To counteract the stiffness of the heavy denim we have rinsed off the starch, making the jeans comfier from the get-go. The half-selvedge might sound different, but it is quite nifty. Since kids' jeans are tiny, placing all leg pattern pieces along the selvedge results in unused fabric in the middle. By utilizing the selvedge for only half of the leg pattern pieces, we maximize fabric efficiency. We've come across a fair share of vintage jeans designed this way, so back in the day it was not all that uncommon. It was likely used for the same reason we do, but it may also have been used to add shape to the leg.
